EAT CANDY? YOU MIGHT BE EATING BUGS

ATTENTION: If you have a sweet tooth, you should know that Junior Mints, Red Hots, Lemonhead, and Boston Baked Beans candies are coated with bug juice—yes, from real bugs.

To make the glaze that coats these sweets, almost 100,000 bugs are killed. It takes this many lives to make just 1 pound of "shellac flakes," an ingredient in confectioners glaze. That means that Tootsie Roll Industries and Ferrara are killing billions of insects every year—and then feeding them to people who would probably bug out if they knew.

But guess what? Ferrara's Atomic FireBall candies and Tootsie's Cry Baby Bubble Gum are vegan. So we know that both brands already have bug-free glaze recipes, but they're choosing to keep using BUGS in some of their items.

Plus, jelly beans made by Jolly Rancher, along with Nerds and Skittles, are all bug-free. And they seem to be quite popular.

These days, people want vegan choices. That's why Starbucks replaced the dye made of crushed beetles in its Frappuccino recipe, Chipotle took the bacon out of its pinto beans, and White Castle got rid of the dairy ingredients in its buns.

The verdict is in—vegan candy for the win!

Tell Tootsie Roll Industries and Ferrara to de-bug their glazes!
