If you've ever been to a beachside store while on vacation or even to a local pet store, you've probably seen hermit crabs for sale. You may have even been tempted to ask your parents to buy one. But what you might not know is that every hermit crab sold in a gift shop or mall was captured from his or her home in the wild.
Crabs are complex animals who need to be in the wild in order to be happy and healthy. Instead of living freely and doing things they enjoy—like burrowing in the warm sand, spending time with members of their colony, and exploring the coastline—captive hermit crabs will spend most of their short lives in a tiny plastic box.
Hermit crabs can live for more than 30 years in their natural habitats on tropical seashores, but after they're bought, most only live for a few months to a year. They are often slowly poisoned by tap water and the toxic paint that some of their shells are decorated with.
Buying a hermit crab means supporting a cruel industry that takes these sensitive animals from their homes in the wild and ships them off to stores to be sold for a profit. They belong in the wild, not in stores.
